MuseMetrics: integrated museum data management platform
MuseMetrics is an R&D project aimed at transforming the energy, environmental and operational management of museums through real-time data, artificial intelligence and machine learning. The initiative seeks to make museum spaces more sustainable without compromising the preventive conservation of cultural heritage or the visitor experience.
General project objective
The main objective of MuseMetrics is to achieve an optimal balance between energy sustainability, rigorous conservation of art collections and visitor comfort in cultural and museum spaces.
The project addresses a key challenge in the sector: museums must maintain strict temperature, humidity and lighting conditions to preserve works of art, which entails high energy consumption. At the same time, visitor numbers can vary significantly between apparently similar days, which, together with the management of visitor flows, directly impacts energy expenditure and the experience within exhibition spaces.
Innovation and R&D
MuseMetrics develops an integrated data management platform that brings together information that has until now been dispersed, such as ticket sales, environmental sensors and electricity consumption. Through machine learning algorithms, predictive models and real-time analysis, the platform makes it possible to interpret this information in order to optimise museum operations.
The system is designed to detect deviations in temperature or humidity, anticipate peaks in visitor numbers and generate recommendations to optimise air conditioning and lighting. This intelligent data management enables more predictive and efficient decision-making, with a direct impact on energy efficiency, preventive conservation and the management of visitor flows.
The project draws on the technological expertise and engineering development of ARCbcn-WATTEGA and Mind, within a collaborative ecosystem driven by the Clúster de l’Energia Eficient de Catalunya and the Tech Tourism Cluster.
Project summary
MuseMetrics begins with a pilot test at Moco Museum Barcelona, a space dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The platform integrates energy, environmental and visitor data to move towards more efficient and sustainable management of museum spaces.
With a duration of 11 months, the project aims to develop a solution that can be replicated in museums and heritage facilities, both in Catalunya and in other international markets. The results will be presented publicly at the Forum TuristTIC, with the aim of strengthening innovation applied at the intersection of culture, technology and sustainability.
